Alaska Nike Veterans Reunion
The first 3 days of this event was held in Anchorage, AK on September 4, 2014 through the 6th. This part will only touch on the highlights of the event's of the reunion. Please click on the links to the right for further information. Thursday starts with registration an opining reception an a address by the keynote speaker Sergei Khrushchev . Friday started off with a breakfast and opening address followed by Lectures & Presentations. The afternoon is a visit to Site Point, Battery A. While there a plaque dedication was done to commemorate the 1964 Meritorious Unit Citation received by A-4-43 for their actions during the Anchorage earthquake. Also during the event interviews by UAF Historical History Project were done. These are to be made available for you on line at " Project Jukebox" see link at the right side. Later that evening a special showing of Stanley Kubrick's film "Dr. Strangelove, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb" was done. On Saturday we toured Nike Site Summit and had a Commemorative Event and Plaque Dedication by Nike Veterans. Also that night a farewell dinner for the Alaska Nike Veterans.
We next journeyed to Fairbanks on Sunday traveled by Alaska Railroad to Denali Park stayed overnight at the Grande Denali Lodge. There we had a presentation from Jeff King Iditarod Champion. Then Monday we toured by bus and visited the Clear BMEWS site then on to Fairbanks. Tuesday was spent touring various places. Our first stop was the Riverboat Discovery for a trip on the Chena river. Then we were bussed to Poker Flats which is a high altitude rocket research center run by the University of Alaska Fairbanks, for lunch we stopped at Chatanika Lodge quite interesting place. On our way back to Fairbanks we did a brief photo stop at the Alaska Pipeline. Some of the group then went to the Fountainhead Antique Auto Museum we were granted free admission arranged by Barbara Propes who was part of the planning committee. Wednesday back on the bus our first stop was the WWII memorial that honored the flight's the ferried aircraft to Russia during the war. Then we toured Ft. Wainwright stopped at a memorial park dedicated to those lost in Afghanistan that were from the Ft. Wainwright units, we had a box lunch at that park. Then on to Eielson AFB for a tour there and on to the launcher area of A-2-562 which is now run by the Army Corps of Engineers as part of the Chena Watershed Project. There we were treated to a farewell Chili feed done by the local Legion Post #30. We had a photo op. with a plaque that was made by Paul Kulba that explains the usage of the former Launcher Buildings during the "Cold War".
